It is not at all unusual for clinicians to come to sex therapy training with limited experience or specific training in the realm of couples therapy. Even very experienced couples therapists know that this type of work can be extremely challenging and that continuing to learn and train in this area can be enormously helpful. Relational work is different in many ways from individual work, and it is an essential skill set in the practice of sex therapy. In this course, participants will explore essential foundations and crucial skills for working with couples in sex therapy, beneficial for clinicians of all levels of couples therapy experience.
Join us via Zoom to view this training. Participants must register for class by 5pm the day before. In order to receive CE credits, you must complete the evaluation form that will be sent to you.

Training schedule (All listed times are Eastern Standard Time):
9:00 AM - 10:30 AM: Navigating Transitions: The Evolution of a Couple Relationship, Part 1
Presented by: Jeremiah Gibson, LMFT, CST
A long-term couple relationship has predictable and unpredictable transitions, and, in line with Jay Haley's theory of change, communication issues are most likely to occur when the relationship fails to effectively transition between developmental stages. In this presentation, Jeremiah Gibson will review Ellyn Bader's work on the natural developmental stages of a couple relationship. He will then explore how couples navigate, avoid, and work through the stages of development using an increasingly common transition--deconstructing from conservative religions and cultures.
In the first half of Navigating Transitions, topics will include the development of a couple relationship, bonding and initial sexual experiences, transitioning from bonding to differentiation, faith transitioning and deconstruction, and ethical considerations.
10:30 AM - 10:45 AM: 15 minute break
10:45 AM - 12:15 PM: Navigating Transitions: The Evolution of a Couple Relationship, Part 2
Presented by: Jeremiah Gibson, LMFT, CST
In the second half of Navigating Transitions, Jeremiah Gibson will present an overview of the Developmental Model Theories of Change. The presentation will examine clinical work with couples who navigate differentiation through avoidance, couples who navigate differentiation through conflict, couples in which one partner individuates and the other remains symbiotic, and couples in which one partner differentiates and the other remains symbiotic.
12:15 PM - 12:45 PM: Lunch
12:45 PM - 2:15 PM: Mapping Conflict Cycles in Couples
Presented by: Lauren Drean, LMFT
This course will discuss patterns of conflict couples engage in and how therapists can support couples in understanding the conflict and what emotions fuel these patterns. Participants will learn about "pursuer" and "distancer" roles, common underlying emotions and attachment needs that are connected to relational patterns of conflict.
2:15 PM - 2:30 PM: 15 minute break
2:30 PM - 4:00 PM: Creating Change in Session
Presented by: Lauren Drean, LMFT
Participants will learn and practice skills that support couples in identifying underlying emotions and attachment needs. Participants will practice creating "enactments" as an experiential tool that supports change for couples inside and outside of the therapy room.
