Ethics in Sex Therapy

  • South Shore Sexual Health Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Presented by: Stephanie Wallace, LMFT, CST

No clinician makes the transition from classroom to therapy room without developing an understanding of professional ethics. Even so, when moving into the realm of sex and sexuality (a topic that many folks come to with misinformation, biases, closely held values and beliefs, and lots of vulnerability), a return to the topic of ethics can be critically important. In this course, participants will explore ethical perspectives for the practice of sex therapy, including an examination of unintended consequences, consideration of the Other, and the AASECT Code of Ethics.

This course meets the criteria for the following Core Knowledge Content Areas: A.

Skills Training - Sex and Anxiety

  • South Shore Sexual Health Center (map)

One of the most common and frequent visitors to the office of every sex therapist is, of course, anxiety. Understanding the relationship between anxiety and sexual functioning, and developing clinical skills in this area, is therefore critically important. In this training, two different expert sex therapists in this topic will each present their perspectives, offering knowledge and practical skills valuable for clinicians at all levels of experience.

Join us via Zoom to view this training. Participants must register for class by 5pm the day before. In order to receive CE credits, you must complete the evaluation form that will be sent to you.

12:45 PM - 2:15 PM: Anxiety’s Lessons: Sexual Learning and Liberation via Dynamic Emotional Experience

Presented by: Paula Leech, LMFT, CST-S

Anxiety can be a barrier, a bully, an inhibitor, and a distancer. When we encounter the feeling, we frequently reach for control or default to avoidance in an attempt to find our way out of the discomfort it inspires. When anxiety reveals itself in sexual experience, our clients often report challenges with connection, learning, presence, arousal, and sexual functioning. In this skills training we will not only work to understand how anxiety operates, but we will learn to help our clients partner with the feeling (because fighting it will never work) in order to set themselves free from it’s influence. We will look at the wisdom inherent in all emotions and the reward that can be found when we invite-in what lives beyond or alongside “pleasure.”

2:15 PM - 2:30 PM: 15 minute break

Sexual Trauma

Presented by Paula Leech, LMFT, CST-S

Any degree of sexual trauma can serve to undermine a sense of safety in yourself, your body, your relationships, your sexuality, and the world. The body can become a dangerous place to live, and therefore sex can become confusing or scary, or both. Healing is a process of taking back your needs and desires, learning to articulate and exercise consent on their behalf, and reclaiming your body and sexuality as yours. This course dives into the intricacies of work with sexual trauma, including the introduction of a somatic (body/sensory awareness) approach to treatment.

BDSM & Kink

Presented by: Mary-Ellen Meltzer PMHCNS-BC, CST

What exactly does the term "kink" refer to? While the acronym BDSM (bondage, discipline, dominance, submission, sadism, masochism) may give us some more specific ideas, "kink" is a broad umbrella term that can be loosely defined as unconventional sexual practices. In this course, participants will deepen their awareness of these "unconventional" ways of being sexual, sensual, intimate, and/or erotic, whether the focus is on power, sensation, imagined roles/scenarios, sexualized objects/clothing, or something else entirely. The course will cover such sub-topics (no pun intended) as consent, safety, differentiating kink from abuse, negotiating a scene (for everyone from first time kink explorers to experienced kinksters), the kink community, and self of therapist considerations.

Learning Theory and Its Applications

  • South Shore Sexual Health Center (map)

Presented by: Paula Leech, LMFT, CST-S

Each of us learns in a different way, or do we? Talking about sex confronts a person's spiritual, moral, and personal positioning. Understanding ways of effectively delivering information in order to maximize the storage and integration of the content, especially in sex therapy, is crucially and ethically important to the success of treatment and the overall arc of the therapeutic process. We can empower our clients with information, or cause overwhelm. This course helps clinicians navigate that landscape.

Transgender & Non-Binary Erotic Embodiment

  • South Shore Sexual Health Center (map)

Presented by: Lucie Fielding, PhD, LPC, LMHC (she/they)

“The body,” as Susan Bordo suggests, “is a powerful symbolic form, a surface on which the central rules, hierarchies, and even metaphysical commitments of a culture are inscribed” and continually reinforced. Nowhere is this assertion more observable than in how the cultures in which we move seek to delimit and define our erotic lives and how we embody gender. Most insidiously, these dominant narratives seek to recruit us to do the work of our own erasure and teach us to to minimize, ignore, or outright fear the spark of the erotic in our embodied lives, or, as Audre Lorde put it in her essay The Uses of the Erotic, “the yes inside ourselves, our deepest cravings.” Over the course of this three-hour workshop, participants will be introduced to somatically-grounded and pleasure-centered frameworks and tools that will help them support trans, non-binary, and gender expansive clients nurturing trans erotic embodiment and in attuning to pleasure, desire, and the body’s erotic wisdom.

Desire and Desire Discrepancies

  • South Shore Sexual Health Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Presented by Stephanie Wallace, LMFT, CST

Desire discrepancies are one of the most common reasons that clients report seeking out sex therapy, and even when desire issues are not the immediate presenting problem, desire discrepancies are often present and contributing to relational distress. Additionally, myths and misunderstandings about desire are abundant in media and public discourse. These factors combined make this subject an essential area of learning for any couples/sex therapist. In this course, students will learn to conceptualize desire problems as normal, developmental, relational, and dynamic, and will build skills and strategies for working with clients around desire.

Skills Training - Couples Therapy Fundamentals

  • South Shore Sexual Health Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

It is not at all unusual for clinicians to come to sex therapy training with limited experience or specific training in the realm of couples therapy. Even very experienced couples therapists know that this type of work can be extremely challenging and that continuing to learn and train in this area can be enormously helpful. Relational work is different in many ways from individual work, and it is an essential skill set in the practice of sex therapy. In this course, participants will explore essential foundations and crucial skills for working with couples in sex therapy, beneficial for clinicians of all levels of couples therapy experience.

Join us via Zoom to view this training. Participants must register for class by 5pm the day before. In order to receive CE credits, you must complete the evaluation form that will be sent to you.

Participants who are enrolled in South Shore Sexual Health Center’s Sex Therapy Training Program should email info@ssshealthcenter.com to register for this course.

Training schedule (All listed times are Eastern Standard Time):

9:00 AM - 10:30 AM: Navigating Transitions: The Evolution of a Couple Relationship, Part 1

Presented by: Jeremiah Gibson, LMFT, CST

A long-term couple relationship has predictable and unpredictable transitions, and, in line with Jay Haley's theory of change, communication issues are most likely to occur when the relationship fails to effectively transition between developmental stages. In this presentation, Jeremiah Gibson will review Ellyn Bader's work on the natural developmental stages of a couple relationship. He will then explore how couples navigate, avoid, and work through the stages of development using an increasingly common transition--deconstructing from conservative religions and cultures.

In the first half of Navigating Transitions, topics will include the development of a couple relationship, bonding and initial sexual experiences, transitioning from bonding to differentiation, faith transitioning and deconstruction, and ethical considerations.

10:30 AM - 10:45 AM: 15 minute break

10:45 AM - 12:15 PM: Navigating Transitions: The Evolution of a Couple Relationship, Part 2

Presented by: Jeremiah Gibson, LMFT, CST

In the second half of Navigating Transitions, Jeremiah Gibson will present an overview of the Developmental Model Theories of Change. The presentation will examine clinical work with couples who navigate differentiation through avoidance, couples who navigate differentiation through conflict, couples in which one partner individuates and the other remains symbiotic, and couples in which one partner differentiates and the other remains symbiotic.

12:15 PM - 12:45 PM: Lunch

12:45 PM - 2:15 PM: Mapping Conflict Cycles in Couples

Presented by: Lauren Drean, LMFT

This course will discuss patterns of conflict couples engage in and how therapists can support couples in understanding the conflict and what emotions fuel these patterns. Participants will learn about "pursuer" and "distancer" roles, common underlying emotions and attachment needs that are connected to relational patterns of conflict.

2:15 PM - 2:30 PM: 15 minute break

2:30 PM - 4:00 PM: Creating Change in Session

Presented by: Lauren Drean, LMFT

Participants will learn and practice skills that support couples in identifying underlying emotions and attachment needs. Participants will practice creating "enactments" as an experiential tool that supports change for couples inside and outside of the therapy room.

Sexuality, Christian Normativity, and Purity Culture

  • South Shore Sexual Health Center (map)

Presented by: Jeremiah Gibson, LMFT, CST

From walking through a store during the month of December to listening in on many of the political speeches and debates about what's best for our country and citizens, examples of the dominance and normativity of Christianity in the United States abound. In this course, participants will consider how beliefs, rules, and moral messaging from Christianity have become woven into the fabric of U.S. culture, in particular impacting beliefs and values around sexuality. This perspective explores how Christian normativity functions as a system, separate from the religious beliefs and practices of individuals. The course will take an especially close look at intersections between Christian normativity and cis/heteronormativity, examining messaging around how gender should be expressed, who we should partner with, and how we should behave sexually. Importantly, participants will consider how clinicians might unpack these ideas with Christian clients in ways that are empowering and do not disrespect or devalue their religious beliefs.

From the womb until end-of-life, our sexuality never stops evolving and changing. The courses in the Developmental Sexuality Series look not only at the biological and physical aspects of sexual development, but also relational, spiritual, and emotional dimensions. Students will examine how each area of development affects the others in ways that either encourage or impede further growth. In this course, students will learn about development from the years of later adulthood through the end of life. Students will consider both the accumulated sadness and unique strength and resiliency older adults often bring to sex therapy. The role of ageism and ableism will also be discussed, including an examination of how care providers, adult children, and communities such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, etc. can be helpful or harmful towards the continuing sexual expression of older adults.

Couples make up an enormous percentage of the client population presenting for sex therapy. Additionally, while individuals can and do present for sex therapy with self-focused goals, it is also extremely common for individuals to present for sex therapy with goals related to a partner/relationship. Therefore, it is absolutely essential that sex therapists are trained to work relationally. Systems theory and relational therapy approaches represent a paradigmatic shift from individual therapy models. In this course, participants will be introduced to systems theory, develop ways of conceptualizing couples' interactional patterns, learn to see problems through a relational lens, and more. Case examples and discussions will be utilized throughout.

Skills Training - Cultivating Clinician Competency in Gender Affirming Care: Combatting Anti-Trans Systems

South Shore Sexual Health Center is proud to co-sponsor this virtual conference alongside the New England Association for Family and Systemic Therapy (NEAFAST).

This conference will model how to provide individual, relational, and family therapy with trans and gender affirming communities. Whether your work is individual, relational or family centered, all clinicians need to establish a level of competency in working with gender non-conforming/trans populations and have an understanding of the unique issues facing these populations. Combating Anti-Trans Systems will create a space for those that work directly or indirectly with folx of all genders to ask curious questions in a non-judgemental environment that supports clinicians at all levels of experience. We will explore together how to engage in larger political and social systems, address the politicism of this work while acknowledging our in-office limitations, identify ways in which what is legal is not always ethical.

Keynote presentation by:

Lucie Fielding PhD, MA, LMHC (she/they; elle/iel) is a queer, non-binary trans femme therapist. In addition to Lucie’s work as a therapist she is also sexuality educator. Skills Training - Consensual Non-Monogamy

Presented by: Stephanie Wallace, LMFT, CST

In our culture, monogamous, dyadic partnerships are often depicted as the norm and ideal for relationships, and as a result, resources to support couples in times of difficulty are abundant. For consensually non-monogamous relationships, in which sex and/or romance are not shared exclusively within a dyad, fewer resources are available to guide and support partners, making it an essential task for a sex therapist to learn skills for working with these clients. In this skills training course, participants will begin with a brief lecture outlining basic knowledge about consensual non-monogamy and some therapeutic approaches and interventions for relational therapy with these clients. Next, participants will be challenged to explore their own beliefs, biases, and values about monogamy and non-monogamy, utilizing break out rooms and facilitated discussion. After the lunch break, participants will spend the afternoon engaging in Q&A sessions, case discussion, and role play scenarios. Participants are invited to bring questions about their own clinical work, as well as to consider hypothetical clinical scenarios presented by the instructor.
