This course will provide a sociological framework for the construction of gender within the family system. The instructors will discuss the way society has constructed gender dynamics through the lens of cultural norms, heteronormativity, and relationships. Analysis of media, including Disney, will be used to illustrate the impact of societal trends surrounding childhood, motherhood, and women’s wellness. Participants will discuss the mental load and how it contributes to mental health outcomes, couple dynamics and burnout. Aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic will be discussed to illuminate gender discrepancies.
